It’s that time of the year again where we begin to think of resolutions for the new year. Many of us set lofty goals year after year, only to realize that they were harder to achieve than we had originally anticipated. This is often because the resolutions that we set are not personal enough to make an impact on our lifestyles. Why kill yourself in the gym five days a week when it doesn’t make me happy? Why pinch pennies when it makes you feel miserable and restricted?
Strong resolutions are ones that will lead to fulfillment. This is done by finding balance. Instead of doing the same mundane workout five days a week, find a group fitness class that you enjoy and switch it up. Instead of setting a strict budget, set aside some fun money for you to spend each month. Balance is the key to fulfillment, and ultimately, it is the key to happiness.
Here are some resolutions that will help you find balance as you begin the new year:
One of the most important things you can do for yourself is to choose to do what makes you happy. Reflect on how different people, hobbies, and things make you feel, make a mental note of it, and let it fuel your decisions. If something makes you happy, why not do more of it (and vice versa)?
Another way to choose happiness is by finding positivity in every situation. Instead of letting things get you down, choose to accept the fact that what has happened is in the past, but you still have the opportunity to create a positive outcome as you move forward.
This is something that has taken me up to this point in my life to embrace, but it is the best thing I have ever done for myself. When I say “love yourself,” I mean embrace who you are, what you enjoy, and what you are capable of achieving.
Don’t just embrace yourself, but invest in yourself. This could range from taking the time to give yourself a pedicure because you like the way it makes you feel, to purchasing an e-course on blogging because you enjoy it and want to grow your brand. When you being to love and invest in yourself, you will find fulfillment and balance naturally amidst the craziness of everyday life.
Between families, relationships, work, fitness, and side-projects, the days can quickly become crazy. That is why it is so important to find a moment of calm in each day. I don’t mean sitting down to watch a movie, or scrolling though social media– I mean taking a moment to set everything aside and truly being present.
Before bed every night, I do a short meditation using an app called Calm; this helps me clear my mind, center my thoughts, and focus on the present moment. Finding presence will help you unwind and appreciate a moment of stillness in your busy day.
These resolutions will help you find joy in each day. Soon enough, they will become a natural part of your lifestyle, and they will ultimately leave you feeling a greater sense of purpose and happiness in life.
